Cholera, that dreaded disease, is making a comeback in Togo. A case was confirmed on Tuesday December 12, 2023 in the Golfe health district, Greater Lomé region. The case concerns a 45-year-old woman living in Anfamé, who is currently being treated, according to the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa, who calls for "vigilance and observance of hygiene measures".

The patient affected by this disease is a 45-year-old woman from Anfamé. She is currently being cared for in a health facility. Investigations are underway to detect any other cases or deaths, as indicated in the communiqué from the Ministry of Health.

Cholera is closely monitored in Togo, as a single confirmed case represents an epidemic threshold. Prof. Mijiyawa, Minister of Health, calls on the population to be vigilant, particularly at the end of the year.  He stresses the importance of simple preventive measures such as meticulous hand washing with soap and water, proper cooking of food, reheating leftover food before eating, protecting food from flies and dust, and thorough washing of fruit and vegetables before consumption.

Faced with this latest episode of cholera, it is vital that everyone adopts strict hygienic behavior and follows the recommendations of health authorities to prevent the spread of this potentially fatal disease. Collective vigilance remains the best weapon for controlling and halting the spread of this dreaded infection.
