Urine
can reveal a person's state of health. So always check the colour and
appearance of the urine. Sometimes urine becomes frothy. Is this a sign of some
kind of illness?
Foamy
urine can be the result of a number of processes taking place inside the
body. It can be a sign of illness.
Sign
of kidney disease
The
kidneys play a major role in the body, filtering water and blood to eliminate
certain toxic waste products and producing urine. However, in the event of
illness, this process can be affected. « In some cases of kidney
disease, such as kidney infections, kidney failure or the presence of kidney
stones, urine can become frothy. Kidney disease is generally accompanied by
swelling that starts in the feet and eventually affects the whole body. However,
the appearance of these swellings shows that the disease is already at an
advanced stage and requires urgent medical attention, otherwise it can be fatal »,
explains Dr Bogne Raphael, general practitioner.
Signs
of urinary tract infection
When
bacteria invade the urinary tract, the passage of urine can also produce frothy
urine. « In the case of a
urinary tract infection, this foam can sometimes be accompanied by burning on
urination, pain in the lower abdomen and a very frequent urge to urinate »,
says the GP.
Source
of diabetes or hypertension
Frothy
urine can also reveal the presence of long-standing diabetes or hypertension
hidden in the body but remaining silent. « These diseases are
manifested in particular by an excessive loss of protein in the urine, which
makes the urine foamy. Generally, the presence of excessive protein in the
urine shows that diabetes or hypertension is already advanced and that the
kidneys already have small holes and are seriously ill », emphasises
Dr Bogne.
Advice
« There
are still many causes of frothy urine, and many of them are diseases that need
to be diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible. So starting treatment early
is essential to prevent the disease from progressing and causing dangerous
complications in the body », advises the specialist.
Nevertheless,
there are a few practical tips that can help.
« Maintain good hydration by drinking plenty of water. It is
recommended that you drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of water a day. You also
need to eat a healthy, balanced diet, and do regular sport to improve kidney
health », he added.
