Blood pressure is the pressure exerted by blood on the artery walls. It is an essential indicator of cardiovascular health, and its control becomes all the more important with age. In people aged 70 and over, the risk of hypertension increases, notably in connection with the natural aging of the kidneys.

Normal values remain the same for men and women: systolic pressure below 140 mmHg and diastolic below 90 mmHg. Over the age of 85, a systolic pressure of up to 150 mmHg may be tolerated if the person is frail.

Why is this so important ? Because hypertension, sometimes asymptomatic, can lead to severe headaches, strokes and even cognitive impairment or dementia. That's why it's recommended to check blood pressure at least twice a year from the age of 70, and more frequently if you're undergoing treatment or have symptoms. A home blood pressure monitor is often prescribed to monitor progress. Blood pressure is naturally higher in the morning, mainly due to cortisol. If in doubt, or if your blood pressure is abnormally high, go directly to a health center for optimal treatment.

Monitoring your blood pressure means protecting your heart and brain, and gaining years of healthy life.
