The
University Hospital Centre (CHU) Kara will soon house a haemodialysis centre.
The construction of this centre will strengthen access to emergency treatment,
particularly for the populations of the northern regions of the country. A
tripartite memorandum of understanding for the construction of the centre was
signed on 29 March 2023 in Lomé by the Minister in charge of health, Prof.
Moustafa Mijiyawa, the interim UNDP Resident Representative in Togo, Ms. Nabou
Diaw, and the Managing Director of the Ecobank Group, Jeremy Awori.
The
operationalisation of this centre at the University Hospital of Kara will not
only increase Togo's capacity to offer treatment to patients suffering from
renal failure, but also improve the quality of care and provide a better working
environment for health professionals. Jeremy Awori, Ecobank Group Chief
Executive Officer, reaffirmed Ecobank's continued commitment to supporting the
Togolese government's strengthening of health infrastructure. « We are
proud to contribute to the financing of this new dialysis centre at the Kara
University Hospital, and we thank our partners, UNDP and the Ministry of
Health, for their support in making this project a reality. This new centre
will enable kidney patients to benefit from life-changing and life-saving
treatment, in line with the mission of the Ecobank Foundation ». The
Minister of Health noted that this haemodialysis service is timely. « The opening of a haemodialysis
service at the Kara University Hospital is in line with both the National
Health Development Plan (PNDS) and the government's roadmap », said
Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa.
In Togo, the
Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital in Lomé is currently the only public
hospital in Togo to have a haemodialysis centre. Its capacity is limited and
the waiting list is over 500 patients.
