Paragis is a natural diuretic plant that increases the amount of water in the body and expels salt in the form of urine. It is also used to treat urinary tract infections. "Essogbé" contains alkaloids and hydrocyanic acid, which act as substances in the treatment of these ailments.

In particular, the plant contains three active ingredients: acetaminophen, chlorphenamine and phenylephrine. Acetaminophen is an analgesic that reduces pain and fever. Chlorphenamine is an antihistamine that relieves runny noses and phenylephrine works by reducing nasal congestion.

In the « Etude chimique des plantes à flavonoides du Togo » by scientist K. Hodouto, paragis' active ingredients have a protective effect on the kidneys and it is a natural diuretic. Another study, published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, assessed the diuretic effects of paragis on healthy human volunteers. The participants were given a dose of paragis and then monitored to measure urine production. The results showed a significant increase in urine production in subjects who had taken paragis compared with the control group.

Recipe 1: Make a decoction of the roots of 2 Essogbé stems and the beard of a corn cob in 1 litre of water for 15 minutes. Leave to stand and filter.Drink 1 glass of bamboo morning and evening.  

Recipe 2: Boil 3 whole leafy stalks of paragis with 2 lemons cut up in 1 litre of water and then crush the seeds of 1 ripe « Atakou » fruit. Mix well.Drink 1 glass of bamboo in the morning and 1 glass in the evening.
